You don't find many mining certificates dating back as far as the 1830s. Incorporated April 9, 1828 and March 26, 1833. Lot of two. 1) Early # 25, issued for 220 shares to Joseph Fellows of Geneva, Ontario County. Signed by WIlliam Young Jr and president B Whiting. Vignettes include horse. cow, train, Native American and two distinguished looking gentleman. Printed by Draper, Toppan Longacre & Co. 2) Number 203 for $1,000. Signed by Bowen Whitney, president, and HW Bostwick, treasurer. 8.25" x 10.5" Some staining on top border. Very thin paper. According to the 1843 New York State Register, this company, along with the Tioga Navigation Co., merged to form the Blossburg & Corning Railroad. The coal and iron mines were located in Blossburg, PA. The railroad went 40 miles from the mines to Corning. Estimated production of coal in 1841 was 40,000 tons. On May 20, 1842 a treaty was signed with the Seneca Indians. "And whereas on the day of making this treaty, and bearing even date herewith, a certain indenture was made executed and concluded by and between the said Seneca nation of Indians and Thomas L. Ogden, and Joseph Fellows, assignees under the State of Massachusetts." "an indenture of that date was made and executed by and between the parties to this agreement, whereby the chiefs and headmen of the Seneca nation of Indians for the consideration of two hundred and two thousand dollars did grant, bargain, release and confirm unto the said Thomas Ludlow Ogden and Joseph Fellows, all those four several tracts of land, situate within the State of New York..."
