These are two "leads" or lead strikes created to test a newly cut medallic die before it it hardened. The unhardened die would be covered with a soft lead disk and then placed in a low-tonnage press to drive the lead into the pattern on the die. This gives a positive impression of the design which makes it easier to see how the design will look in the finished product. Any changes to the design can be more easily made by the die cutter before the die steel has been heat treated. These two lead trial strikes, purportedly from the Hoffman Mint, are from a proposed design for a Token and Medal Society (TAMS) literary medal. The design was rejected by the TAMS board. Designs such as these produce medallions with a large, open engravable space which can be personalized after striking with some sort of engraving tool -- possibly a diamond scribe or a laser engraver. This keeps the cost of an individual medal low, since a die does not need to be cut for every award. This same laurel wreath design was produced by Medallic Art Company.
