Rare. Museum quality. This tomahawk from the Wigwam collection came to the collection without history, as do many artifacts. It is of the Trade Ax style, marked with an interlocking “JR” in a circle on one face. It is similar to, and almost exactly the same as an ax found in Mark Miller’s excellent web site furtradetomahawks.com under the Missouri Wars section. It is also the same as an approximate 1665-1675 ax that is illustrated by Nicholas (“Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicholas….1700) as also shown by Miller. A search through the standard treatise American Indian Tomahawks by Harold Peterson, 1971, does not show this maker’s mark. Peterson does list two possible makers with these same initials: Johnson, Reynaldo (1808) or J. Rose & Son (1806), but neither of these are notated by initials, rather they are shown as known makers with unknown marks. (pp48-50). Has decorative handle of buckskin, the handles also has decoration that has been removed from the handle. Length is 2' & ax head is 7".
