Topographical sketch of the gold and quicksilver district of California July 25, 1848 EOCOLT USA. This stands for Edward Otho Cresap Ord, Lieut. USA. 15.5 x 21.5". Number 54 in wheats maps of the California gold region week claims this was the first map to try to get cartographic accuracy after the gold discoveries of early 1848 this map is pictured between pages 32 and 33 in Wheat. It is a critically important map because of its attempt at accuracy. Like other early maps, this shows shaded relief of the Sierra Nevada and includes the term mountain lake for Tahoe. The data used and presented on this map appears to have been used by the Lawson map as described in another lot in this sale. Rare and important. This map has a few folds and some foxing though not at all serious. California
