This Springfield model 1870 is a full length two band musket. The first model 1870 was chambered for .50-70 caliber without a barrel liner. Only 1000 were made. They are recognized by the rear sight up against the receiver; the second model has the rear sight about one inch from the receiver. Serial number #38945 is found on the left side of the receiver, 1870 and eagle stamped on the trapdoor lid, "19" proudly stamped on the receiver top. The lock-plate is stamped U.S. Springfield with the eagle and "1863" stamped behind the hammer (which is correct for the model 1870). The butt-plate is stamped "US" at the heel, each barrel band is stamped "U" with screws and swivels. The stock is cracked at the wrist, the rear sight broken, the hammer, firing pin, nose cap and ramrod are missing. A great restoration project. Brass for .50-70 is available from Buffalo Arms Co. originally made at .50-70-450. 49 in. overall length, 27 1/2 in. barrel. No FFL required. No sales to New York City, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. City: State: Date:
