Treasure Box Parts with Stippled Seal from the SS Central America Treasure. Numerous wood parts from one of the dozens of wood treasure boxes from the "Garden of Gold" in the ship's locked and secure "gold room." One of the pieces has the remnants of an original red wax seal used to secure part of the box in a tamper-proof method. This wax seal appears to have a stippled pattern, possibly from a specific merchant rather than a bank, as most banks used specific self-identified seals. Private company gold was regularly shipped on the SSCA. Some was directly shipped by the customer. Others were contained under consignments through an express company (the two largest express shippers were Wells, Fargo and Freeman Express), or through a commission merchant. Commission merchants also acted as bankers, such as Alsop & Co. A story regarding commission merchants and bankers can be found in another section of this catalog.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
