This is an 1864 bill of lading for a shipment of machinery from San Francisco to Portland. The Brother Jonathan sank off the coast of California in 1865, a year after this bill was drawn, and on that voyage carried a huge amount of gold. Divers finally found the wreck in 1993 and recovered more than 1,207 gold coins. Litigation immediately ensued, finally ending with the salvors receiving 80% of the gold. An auction in 1999 resulted in the salvors selling 1,006 coins for $6.3 million. These coins today retain a high collectors' value. 8.5 x 11"
