This is a list of what you will find inside this ledger! Companies are in the Western United States with a strong California Connection!
A. San Francisco. Possibly the personal ledger of a professional corporate treasurer Charles C. Bowman, 1860-1870. 360pp ledger, blue paper, 10 x 14”. Used every few pages, with large blank spots left open for additional entries through time. Particularly fascinating are the segregations between racial labor groups, here Chinese, whites and blacks.
B. First entry is “cost of warehouse corner of Sansome and Broadway, 1860. “Paid Templeton’s bill bricks, …cash paid Cosgrave & Bindle for mason work on basement…cash paid Caleb Hyatt for services as architect…” trough page 31. Then starts a series of Mining Company entries:
C. Heckendorn Gold & Silver MC 1865” Here the writer pays for incorporation papers in SF, cash paid for assays, drayage… assessments on my stock…(in Heckendorn G
D. Honest G&SMC 1864, cash paid for freight and drayage on quartz rock, .. Bosqui’s bill stock book” Here Bosqui, a prominent printer in SF, probably printed the Honest G&S MC stocks;
E. American G&S MC 1863;
F. Salt Spring Valley MC 1864. Again, Bosqui printed the stock book. Another Calaveras County mine.
G. St Charles & St Joseph MC 1863
H. Golden Age & Empire, 1865 “Paid Kellogg Hewston & Co for assaying” (multiple entries)
I. Sylvester bowman 1865. bought 50 shares Golden Age and Empire, received cash from the Pacific Mail & Steamship company.
J. Golden Age & Empire G&S MC. 1865-1866. “Paid Rien Hemme assay”
K. Butte Canal and Ditching Co. 1870. here the accountant separates white and Chinese labor in specific line entries.
L. Sutter Canal & Mining Co. 1870. 4pp. Another strong distinction between white, black and Chinese labor (see p93). The Sutter and Butte companies were involved in the same lawsuit in Amador County.
M. Concrete account. 1869-71.
N. James McDevitt, 1869-70. page 109. End.
