Touching handwritten letter dated July 15th, 1881 on Treasury Department Office of Internal Revenue letterhead. Green Berry Raum (1829-1909) replies to a request from a young girl in Bellaire Ohio for his autograph. His two page response includes his wish "that you may grow up to be an intelligent useful member of society, that your life may be long and prosperous, and that you will endeavor to increase your own happiness by making others happy." Raum was a lawyer, author, U. S. Representative from Illinois, as well as a brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He presided over the Internal Revenue Service for seven years.
