Published by the Government printing office in Washington 1870: a 96 page (6 x 9 inches) report by John Jay Knox, deputy comptroller of the currency giving the correspondence of the Treasury Department relative to the revision of the laws pertaining to the Mint and Coinage of the United States. Some proposals include: reducing the weight of the silver dollar; dropping the $3 and $1 gold coins, abolishing all mints except Philadelphia and San Francisco. Knox's proposal was passed into law after a few amendments as the Coinage Act of 1873 ó an event which triggered a rapid fall in the price of silver and which ushered in an era of bitter currency debate which dominated the political landscape for the better part of three decades.
