Number 99 for 5 shares to Hugh Stockdale. Datelined Star City 1864. Signed by president JR Simons and secretary EF Dunne. Incorporated October 19, 1863. Miner with pick vignette. WB Cooke printers from San Francisco. Not cancelled. Nicks on edges. Holes in certificate - especially on left. The Star District was organized in 1861, and is one of the cluster in the vicinity of Unionville, the town of Star City being about twelve miles from Unionville. Dunne represent Humboldt County in the 1864 Constitutional Convention. He was a judge and mining lawyer. But his real importance plays out in the 1865 Star City / Paradise Valley Indian troubles. He telegraphed and wrote to Governor Blasdell repeatedly asking for rifles, ammunition and a stronger military presence. "One hundred stand and 1,000 ammunition should work nicely." "Soldiers have been here for quite a while with no benefit. They move too slowly. The Indians can only be found through perseverance, hardship, and toil. Soldiers do not peruse the Indians with the zeal that citizen would who are fighting for their homes." More correspondence from Dunne, other ranchers, and the United States Army to Governor Blasdell. 25 pages of historical research taken from references, but mostly from the correspondence which is oft quoted.
