Collection of 7 Real Photo postcards of construction of the Westend Plant (later Stauffer Chemical Company) at Searles Lake, Trona, California. XRARE. Blank, unused postcards include photos, c1904-18, of construction of the plant and the completed plant in the '20s, with views of Searles Lake. F. M. "Borax" Smith organized the Westend Plant in 1920, and the chemical plant has been in operation since that time. Smith named it after his "West End Mining Company" of Tonopah, Nevada. Smith was a leading figure in the exploration for borax, and he became well known for the 20-mule team borax wagons he is credited with originating, although John Searles, who is credited for discovering borax at Searles Lake (named after him) in the 1870s, used smaller 20-mule wagons before Smith. In 1956 Westend was merged with Stauffer Chemical Company. From: SEARLES VALLEY STORY written and published by Searles Lake Branch American Association of University Women May 1975. (Searles initial borax works had been burned down by Indians in a bloody battle. It was rebuilt as the San Bernardino Borax Mining company, which was bought out by rival interests in 1895.)
