Truckee Basin and Lake Tahoe Directory for 1884-1885; Reno Evening Gazette (1884), [undated on title page.] 164pp including covers. 5 1/4 x 8". Light green boards with print. Pagination includes covers and advertisements. Twenty communities listed, all either at Tahoe, or along the Truckee River (Southern Pacific RR, referred to as "CPRR" throughout the Directory). The communities (lumber, ice camps, railroad camps, towns): Boca, Bronco, Camp 23, Camp 24, Camp 25, Clinton, Cuba, Essex, Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Tahoe Hot Springs, Incline Crystal Bay, Glenbrook, Rowland's, Tallac, Sugar Pine Point, Reno, Truckee, Verdi, Wadsworth. 71 advertisements, all listed on p7. Benton's Stage line not listed. Steamboat Hot Springs has an ad, but is not included in the directory portion. Paher 647. This is an exceptionally rare directory. It is not listed in Howes, OCLC, nor in Quebedeaux, who does list the 1883 Tahoe Basin Directory. This piece is so rare, it is very possible Quebedeaux did not know about it. I (fh) know of this copy, and one other in institutional hands. Paher has the work listed, but has no descriptive text. In a personal call, he knew of its existence, but was unable to find a copy to describe. This directory is published by the Reno Evening Gazette. About this time (1884), the two Reno newspapers switched to a more acid-rich pulp paper, away from the older, more durable and expensive rag. This acid-rich paper disintegrates easily, which became a major problem for archivists in the later twentieth century. Here, the title page has been expertly repaired at the upper corners.
