Early Gold Rush pieces with a key autograph on the reverse. Issued to Charles Mills (relation?). Signed on back by 'D. O. Mills' transferring stock to Edgar Mills (brother) from the estate of James Mills (father)! A true family affair. Number 141. Signed by William H. Clark (secretary) and the president, Robinson. cancelled. A classic mining vignette showing a dammed river, miners operating sluices and a rocker. Lithography by Britton & Rey, S.F. 6 x 9.75 inches. Darius Ogden Mills was a businessman and bank owner during the California Gold Rush. He followed his two brothers (including James) out to California. He co-founded the ultra-powerful Bank of California, which dominated mining on the Comstock Lode until the "Bonanza Kings" were able to break that hold. Mills was also co-owner of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. His net worth in 2021 dollars would be about $15 billion.
