Lot of 3 stocks issued 1854 in Columbia to James Mills. All are signed on the reverse by DO Mills. Fantastic sluice mining vignette by Britton & Rey. Darius Ogden Mills (1825–1910) was an American banker, industrialist, and philanthropist who played a major role in the economic development of California during and after the Gold Rush. Originally from New York, he moved west in 1848 and founded the National Gold Bank of D. O. Mills & Co. in Sacramento, becoming one of the region's most influential financiers. Mills invested heavily in railroads, mining, and utilities, and later helped establish the Bank of California, which became a cornerstone of Western finance. Known for his prudence and integrity, he accumulated a vast fortune while maintaining a reputation for stability during volatile economic times. In his later years, Mills devoted much of his wealth to philanthropy, supporting education, libraries, and public institutions both in California and New York.
