This is a locking express bag that was meant to carry heavy weight. Fashioned in the shape of saddle bags they measure 11 in. wide by 12 in. long with an opening to straddle about 2 in. The handle is a very heavy gauge leather strap for carrying great weight possibly gold coins. The strap closures for each flap is an aluminum riveted plate. The leather is machine stitched. C. 1900 est. The inside compartments show little if any actual wear. The leather stained edge is still visible on the interior. This pair of bags could have been used by an express company, a bank, postal carrier, mining company, or store to transport something heavy and valuable. The opening at the top suggests that it rested on something about 2 in. wide but not a horse or saddle; possibly a wood frame, chair back or motorcycle of the period. Further research may be needed to find the real purpose of this bag.
