1) Lid engraved CJS, 1799. Tank engraved with man in long coat tipping his hat and holding a beer stein. Engraved in German: "Es lebe des Brautigams Stamm und auch der Braut ihr Haufs" ("Long live the bridegroom and the bride in her house"). "Auf diefen treuen Wunsch Trunck ich es alles Flerauf" ("On my faithful wish I trundled it all"). Some dents in tank.2) Fairly plain tank, top engraved, A B K. Good condition. For centuries, pewter was the most popular material used for making eating and drinking utensils. Pewter does not tarnish, rust, or break, and of great importance in the stein business, it does not impart a taste to beer, as do copper, silver, and iron. It was not until the 1700s that stoneware replaced pewter as the material of choice for most steins. State:zGermany City: Date: ID#43873
