Lot of 2. Both were taken by John Berkin, who was a photographer active in Boulder, Montana in 1890 [Mautz]. 1) Front of card shows well-dressed younger man standing beside two dogs. Gilt lettering at the bottom: "John Berkin/ Negatives Preserved/ Boulder, Mont." Reverse has pen notations: "Clarence Drake and Dogs." Measures 4 1/4" x 6 1/2". Slight fading and soiling. Corners fragile. 2) Larger photograph showing six men standing outside of one shop and one more standing in front of a building labeled "Meat Market." One of the men appears to be the same young man from the first cabinet card. There is even one of the same dogs sitting next to him. Measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/4." Reverse has "John Berkin/ Artistic Photographer/ Boulder, Mont." Card has soiling and some creases, especially in the upper right corner. Image has good contrast and detail. Clarence Drake may be the Clarence Drake referenced in "Progressive Men of the State of Montana" who worked in the pharmaceutical business in Butte and Whitehall before becoming postmaster of Choteau in 1896.
