Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metal work with glass, gemstones, and other vitreous materials, usually separated by very thin strips of brass to form compartments (cloisons in French). In these two vases, the spaces have been filled with a glassy enamel and fired in a kiln to melt it smooth. The item is then highly polished to level the enamel and brass into the finished shape. Blue vase is approx 4 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall. Red vase is approx 3 inches in diameter and 5 inches tall.
