Issued in 1896. Due 2047! Orange $500 (coupons 313-400) and brown $1,000 (coupons 292-400). Congress chartered the Northern Pacific Railway Company on July 2, 1864 with the goals of connecting the Great Lakes with Puget Sound on the Pacific, opening vast new lands for farming, ranching, lumbering and mining, and linking Washington and Oregon to the rest of the country. The construction of the railroad and the company survived such perils as two bankruptcies, the stock market crash, and Indian attacks, but on May 27, 1988, the first train passed through directly to Puget Sound.
