Lot of 2 different. Inc. January 9th, 1888. No. 59 and No. 24, both issued to Bryant Howard on July 5th, 1888 in San Diego. Both signed by president William Carlson and secretary Dixon. Black border and print, ornate logos that feature a vignette of the hotel. Printed by Gould & Hutton, Printers & Lithographers. Neither cancelled. One pinhole each. Excellent condition. 5.5 x 10" William H. Carlson served two terms as San Diego mayor. and partner Frank J. Higgins incorporated the Ocean Beach Company, Ocean Beach Hotel Company, and the Ocean Beach Rail Road Company. Ocean Beach was their planned 600 acre subdivision of San Diego. They built the Cliff House hotel (our vignette) and subdivided the area into lots. They sold 2,200 lots in the first few weeks. To lure buyers they promised to build a rail line to downtown, since the development was 2½ hours from downtown by carriage. However, it was not easy to reach and was not successful. Higgins committed suicide. The hotel burned down in 1898. Ken Prag Collection
