The Thompson brothers got into the lumber business before the civil war and successfully built a lumber empire. In 1881,they moved their operations to Willard, Texas, to market lumber via the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway. From 1906 on, they managed their businesses from their offices in Houston. The panic of 1907 hit the company hard, but they received a cash infusion from Ben Foster, a lumberman from Kansas City.
