Two different style Sapphire Mill, W.S. Hobart checks. 1) Aug. 8. 1868. Nevada, Sapphire and Alta Mills (Nevada and Alta crossed out), Agency of The Bank of California. Two cent NV adhesive and 2 cent IR adhesive. Cut cancel with tape repair. Issued to W.S. Hobart for $5,000. Signed W.S. Hobart by N.C. Hall. The interesting thing is that the reverse of the check is signed the same way. Hobart never endorsed this check himself. This has huge potential to be an embezzlement! Hall is listed in the 1873 directory as being the superintendent of the Virginia & Gold Hill Water Company, which Hobart was intimately involved with also. 2) Later check, this time RN-D. Sept. 12, 1874, issued for Mill Pay Roll for $1,058.84. Signed W.S. Hobart per H.C. Raymond. Cut cancel and small stain. (Prag Collection)
