This bottle and the next lot comprise two different Winkle soda bottles, a true aqua and a yellow-aqua example of the Henry Winkle soda bottles. Both are iron pontiled. The true aqua example is rare. Most of the yellow-aqua bottles are full of tiny "seed" bubbles, as is this specimen. In a study group of 12 bottles, there were only two in true aqua. All have a long neck, unusual for a gold rush period bottle, and thus probably not made at the union Glass Works in Philadelphia. This bottle also used the designation "Sac City". On the reverse is "XX", what may have been a brand name. Winkle was only in business from 1852-1853 or 1854, at the front end of the California gold rush. Winkle's business was so short-lived that it is a wonder many of his embossed bottles survive. This lot is the true aqua specimen, 29568. Holabird Collection.
