Nice pencil drawings of the Bay area by Charles S. Swasey (1827-1909). Drawings: "Off the Farallones" signed C.S.Swasey, Dec. 1882. 7.5" x 9.5", on paper. "City Front--from the Ferry 1882", signed C. S. Swasey. 7.5" x 9.5" on paper. Swasey was born in Thomaston, ME. Swasey sailed around the Horn to California in 1850. After mining in the Mother Lode area for several months, he established a hotel in Sacramento. Subsequently, he moved to San Francisco where he was an official at the mint and cashier at the Custom House. Primarily a marine painter, Swasey also painted murals in homes and other public places. We do not know the relation of Swasey, but assume he was a friend of the Nahls. His drawings are from the Nahl archive.
