Lot of 2 for Bonanza King mining millionaire and US Senator James G. Fair. 1) Letterbook copy of letter sent by Fair in the 1860s when he was superintendent of the Hale & Norcross. Sent to the secretary, the message talks about erecting the foundation for a large pumping engine, retimbering the main shaft, and erecting new tanks. The Bonanza Kings wrestled away this mine from the Bank of California in 1869 by buying up the stock. It is likely this letter dates to just after their takeover when Fair became supt. and they made improvements to make it a paying mine. 2) Letter written by a secretary for Fair, San Francisco, 1881. Addressed to Caldwell and discusses personal health. Virginia City Nevada Franklin Collection
