1) Fort Carlin! Ever Heard of It? Official executive document from December 11, 1874. It is a proposal for a bill from William W. Belknap to the House of Representatives. In it he is asking for Congress to authorize a military post near Carlin, Nevada. He and N. H. Davis, Inspector General make the following case; it is important that the forts are positioned to do the most good. Carlin is just about 1/2 way between Reno and Salt Lake City and would occupy such a strategic spot. Includes a Carlin billhead for John Kain, blacksmith, horseshoeing a specialty. Was he one of the mastershoers that the transcontinental railroad was looking for. 2) The Bank of California was worried that the Sutro Tunnel would eat into its profits. So they began a smear campaign against Sutro and his tunnel. This was Sutro's rebuttal. California Banking scandal pamphlet titled, "The Style of Warfare as Carried On By The California Bank Ring. Outrageous Attacks on The Honor and Integrity of Mr. Sutro. What Money Will Do!"
