The Winters family initially settled in Yolo County. When the gold strikes happened in Nevada, they began hauling freight from Placerville to the Carson Valley. In the 1850`s, the Winters family became wealthy from their freighting business, and from holdings in the Comstock. At one point, they owned 18,000 acres of land in California and Nevada. Theodore Winters (1823-1906) later lost most of his property and fortune when he unsuccessfully ran for Nevada governor in 1890. The town of Winters in California is named after him.
