Where was the law in the 1900's in Colorado? 1) "Category of Crime of the Mine Operators' Association." This is a partial list showing the 851 men murdered in the last four years. It was compiled by the Western Federation of Mines in Denver and printed by the Miners Magazine. From HS Allen of Goldfield to Joseph Zuban of Victor. Includes the Victor Riots, Stratton';s Independence Mine, those robbed and murdered, thugs now working for the mine owner, etc. Lists crimes from May 1, 1899 to 1904. Things like the shooting and dynamiting of assayer Phillip Shuck, attempt to wreck the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad carrying non-union men, no arrests at Anaconda when Fred Taggart was beaten and his house was burned to the ground. There is a short article on a vigilance committee which deported 227 miners from Victor (all miners). 31 pages. Covers detached. A GREAT PIECE OF HISTORY. 2) "Criminal Record of the Western Federation of Miners, Coeur D'Alene to Cripple Creek, 1894-1904." This is the other side of the story, although far more prejudiced! Focus here is on the "Infernal Machine" that killed 13 at Cripple Creek. Gives a history of armed violence against the mine owners, mostly in Colorado. Definitely anti-union. 32 pages.
