Lot of 2 incredibly early Comstock checks. 1) Wells Fargo & Co. check. Dateline Va City, March 11th, 1861. Pay to C.S. $20. Signed by Charles Strong. At this time, Strong was the superintendent of the Gould & Curry Mine. At the start of 1861, Virginia City was part of Utah Territory--Nevada Territory didn't exist until March 2nd, 1861. This check was written only 9 days after Nevada Territory was established! Printed by Excelsior Print, San Francisco. Purple/blue. Pinhole, light soiling, fold lines with separation starting, and a previous collector's stamp (C.O. COLE CO.) on reverse. Stamp not visible on front. This will be the earliest Comstock check in your collection!! 2) Wells Fargo green printed form, Virginia City printed designation. Issued in 1861 to John Hesson for $40, also by Charles Strong (and thus the Gould & Curry MC).
