Two U.S. bridge building companies' stock certificates, with beautiful vignettes, from Arkansas and Ohio. The lot includes: The Baring Cross Bridge Company, with vignette of two trains crossing the Baring Cross Railroad Bridge over the Arkansas River, issued in 1908, signed by President and Secretary with dark orange company seal, 9 3/8" x 7", fine cond. w/ slight folds; and Clarksburg-Columbus Short Route Bridge Company, with vignette of arched bridge over the Ohio River and three vessels, issued in 1936, signed by President and Treasurer, 11 1/2" x 7 1/2", fine cond. Two suspension bridges built by the company in 1928 that span the Ohio River include the Clarksburg-Columbus Short Route Bridge and the Silver Bridge. The Silver Bridge collapsed during the afternoon rush hour during a busy Christmas shopping season, sending 32 vehicles into the icy waters of the Ohio River, killing 46 people. A new bridge was eventually built downstream, the Hi Carpenter Memorial Bridge, which opened for traffic in 1977.
