A group of 4 U.S. Commemorative Submarine Covers, c1931-76. Includes a SELDOM SEEN Wilkins-Ellsworth Trans Arctic Submarine Expedition 1931 cachet, New York (May 8, 1931 cancel) to London (Oct. 4, 1931 cancel). U.S. & British adhesive stamps. Sir George Hubert Wilkins was an Australian polar explorer, ornithologist, pilot, soldier, geographer & photographer. He narrowly failed in an attempt to be the first to cross under the North Pole in a submarine, an expedition largely financed by wealthy friend & colleague Lincoln Ellsworth. But he was able to prove that submarines were capable of operating beneath the polar ice cap, thereby paving the way for future successful missions.
Also included are 3 covers with Launching cachets for: the Aluminaut, Groton, Conn. 1964 cancel; USS Omaha, Groton, Conn. 1976 cancel; & USS Jacksonville, Groton, Conn. 1976 cancel. All with special commemorative adhesive stamps. Please see photo(s) for more details. [
