Extremely rare. This is right in the middle of the boom years for Meadow Lake. "U.S. Grant Gold Mine, Base of Old Man Mountain, S. Yuba River" (printed at bottom left). "Excelsior District, Nevada County, California" (printed under title). Inc. July 13th, 1867. Low number 17, issued for 100 shares to company secretary TL Barker on Oct. 19th, 1867 in San Francisco. Signed by Barker and president John Bray. Not cancelled. Black border and print, with portrait vignette of President Ulysses S. Grant. Printed by Towne & Bacon, SF. 25 cent adhesive revenue stamp attached on the left side, pen cancelled. Folds, creases, areas of light toning. 5.25 x 9.5" Not listed in Filer. The Excelsior District, later known as the Meadow Lake District, was founded in 1863 and is located in eastern Nevada County just south of Meadow Lake and approximately 7 miles northeast of the town of Cisco. The most prominent mine was the Excelsior. Old Man Mountain is located southwest of Meadow Lake. There was a mini Gold Rush to Meadow Lake in 1865 that lasted till 1869.
