This rare U. S. Stage Company receipt for W. H. Fillmore at Cherry Creek was sent from Wells, Nevada on July 26, 1886. Receipt says "1 pkg guards, $2.00. Approximately 4x4". US Sstage was incorporated in Nevada in 1879. Frank Clugage was the superintendent. They ran mail for the U. S. Post Office and bullion for Wells Fargo. The U. S. Stage Company was the largest contracted service provider in Nevada in the 1880’s. Carson City was the headquarters and their main route ran from Carson City to Alida Valley, in California with stops at Aurora, Belleville, Bodie, etc. The second route that they ran centered around Battle Mountain and included Cornucopia, Tuscarora, Elko, Columbia, and Austin. These routes are well documented in the manuscript Collection of the U. S. Stage Company at the Nevada Historical Society. The third line is not as well documented as I could find no mention of it except for the small receipt that I found below. Wells is about 60 miles east of Elko, is on the transcontinental railroad, and the main road into Ely. This route would become the route of the Northern Nevada Railway in 1905. So. It makes sense it would be a major stage road into the mining areas of Ely, Treasure Hill, Hamilton, etc. Cherry Creek would be the 1/2 way point between Wells and Ely. It looks like W.H Fillmore was acting as a guard on a run and was paid $2.00 by the agent Hiller. This would be appropriate as Will Fillmore was a regular contestant in target shooting events and was known to sneak in alcohol to events when he was minor!
