Held the scabbard of the Springfield rifle bayonet. The US rosette is correct for the 1872 frog. Obviously this is an infantry item, as only infantrymen were issued full-length rifles, rather than cavalry carbines, which had no provision for attaching a bayonet. From the Dick Reyes Collection, Carson City. Displayed on Reyes' mantle for years. Possible Custer family artifact. City: State: Date: ID# 38050
