US Navy China Relief Medal (34mm), in copper. Obverse image shows a stone wall with a gate to a characteristic curved-roof building and a dragon in the foreground. The lettering just inside the rim reads: // CHINA RELIEF EXPEDITION //. The reverse reads: // UNITED STATES NAVY / FOR SERVICE // with a spread eagle holding a ship's anchor and chain. The operation was part of an eight-nation effort to relieve the siege of the foreign embassies in Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion.
