This lot contains 100 complete sets of one-troy-ounce, Fine Silver medallions by Northwest Territorial Mint commemorating the USS Scranton (SSN 756), nicknamed the "Iron Horse" and the first submarine built at Newport News using modular construction. The obverse of the medallion shows the nickname at the top, the outline of the submarine behind a steam locomotive, and proclaims, "On Time, On Track, On Target" in celebration of this construction milestone. The reverse is a very detailed official seal of the United States Navy. Each medallion has a brilliant proof-like, mirror finish for the background with the raised relief in a frosted, matte finish. Each is encased in a protective crystal-clear plastic capsule to prevent tarnishing and nestled into a navy-blue leatherette-like clamshell case with matching velvet lining. The white satin of the inside cover is gold-foil embossed with an anchor and "U.S. NAVY." Each leatherette case has a white cardboard protective sleeve with the same gold-foil-embossed anchor design. These are spectacular, display-ready pieces commemorating an historic breakthrough in submarine manufacturing. See photo for details. This lot comes from the liquidation of Northwest Territorial Mint.
