Signed letter from James Buchanan, future President of the United States. He served from 1857 to 1861, and served as secretary of state from 1845 to 1849. He represented Pennsylvania in both houses of the U.S. Congress. Letter is dated February 16, 1841 to an unnamed friend. In the letter Buchanan asks about "W. Pearson of your body, on the floor, in public debate used the following language. "I have no confidence in our Senators. James Buchanan is a dishonest man, and I hardly know whether the other Senator is an accountable being or not." Harsh words indeed.(GB). Nice bold signature. 9.5x7.5", folded, some ink bleed through.
