Presidents Message on California and New Mexico, 1850, seven maps in back with detail of parts of the California coast. Very rare, with handwritten name of the book owner, "Hon. Mr. Hunter," Robert M. T. Hunter, then state senator of Virginia. During the Civil War, Hunter became the Confederate States Secretary of State from 1861–1862, and then President pro tempore of the Confederate States Senate from 1862-1865. He was a critic of President Jefferson Davis. The first four pages of the book contain a message from the 12th president, Zachary Taylor to the 31st Congress, 1st Session, with "Information called for by a resolution of the Senate of the 17th instant, in relation to California and New Mexico." The book is a conglomeration of input from officials from Department of State, Department of Treasury, U.S. Consulate, Secretary of State, Surveyors, Governors, Military Departments, and many more. 6" x 9", 936 pp., leather bound, staining, foxing, spine and corner wear, otherwise very good.
