John P. Sharkey was the son of a harness maker from Wheeling, West Virginia. He arrived in Portland in 1886 where he was a boilermaker, and grocer. In 1895 he began the manufacture of saddles. He was only in business for about 8 years. Despite this short tenure he was noted as successful in inventions of appliances for both eh saddle and harness. This is reported to be the earliest Saddle Catalog from a Portland Saddle Maker! It is also reported to be the first in the U. S. to use the half-tone process within a catalog. [The Early Saddle Makers of Portland, Oregon by Richard & Dorothy Egan]. Signature on back is that of a rather noted saddle maker from Condon, Oregon named John Reisacher. This is either his signature or at least evidence that it was his personal copy. Several items from the Reisacher estate have surfaced in recent years. Complete. 4 pages.
