Older Cabinet card, yellow mount typical of the late 1870s. This photographer pair is not listed in Mautz's new edition of his Biographies of western photographers. It is also not listed in Rowe's Arizona Stereographs, 1865-1930. There is a modern pencil "interpretation" on the reverse, which I believe is wholly made up, claiming it is a military supply wagon at an Arizona Fort. I doubt both, but... There is no indication this is a "fort." There are no protective walls, devices or other. There are no organized "barracks" buildings visibly (might be out of view). The immense wagon train has two stagecoaches leading the way and a train of at least 18 Conestoga wagons, all with drivers in place. There are no uniforms visible. I suggest this is a major supply train to one of possibly Arizona's largest mines. The two wagons in the front would hold the "important" people. While there are no names on the sides visible on the stages, these are the same style as military wagons, as seen in other original AZ photos of the period we've sold recently from another collection. This photo is from the Shirley Bovis Private Tombstone Cowboy Collection. Both photographers are listed in Mautz in California (Burkhart in SF, 1876-87, and Soule in San Jose 1880-1). Is the photo AZ or CA? I’ll bet AZ, unless it is a supply train headed across the San Bernardino desert to a place such as Cerro Gordo, but I doubt it. –(FH). PS> If you do not have any of the books written by Mautz or Rowe, GO GET THEM. Rowe's books on AZ are fabulous technical historical records. Mautz, on the other hand, has engaged in a massive listing of photographers that makes it so much easier to date photographs.
