Union Gold Mining Company Certificate for five shares, dated Nov 29th, 1834. Share No. 1286 to 1290. Signed by Sam Moore(?) as President and P. A. Reading a treasurer.
It shows the bearer of this certificate paid $10 dollar per share, 6 instalments paid since the purchase of the shares, are listed on the bottom of the certificate. Union Gold MC was one of earliest gold companies, incorporated in January 1834. The first gold mining company in Virginia was the Virginia Mining Company out of New York. The Union Gold MC is not listed in Mineral Resources of Virginia by Watson (1907). Early Americans were looking for gold in Virginia since the mid 1600s, with the first gold being sent to the US Mint in 1829. This was part of America's first gold rush, in the Appalachian gold belt, and is described by JT Pardee and CF Park Jr in Gold deposits of the southern Piedmont (USGS 1948, pp. 13-27), stating "Farmers find gold in every hill" (p. 13). Not listed in Whitney, 1854.
