An antique ore bag from the Union Mine of Atolia, California, dating from c.1870s. The bag has a coarse weave with some wear and fraying at the mouth. It has the text 'UNION MINE / OWENYO CALIF.' printed in black ink (heavily faded, but still legible). A smear of black ink also obscures some text. The reverse side of the bag has the letters 'H' and 'XX' handwritten in black, perhaps indicating the origin of the bag's contents.
The Union Mine was located in the town (now ghost town) of Atolia, which was one of the largest producers of tungsten in California. Union, which was a major mine in the area, commenced operation in the 1910s and supplied tungsten to the U.S. war effort throughout the first World War. It was "extensively worked", and eventually developed to a depth of 950 feet (Burchard, 1884). Owenyo, California, the town named on the bag, was a shipping point on the west end of Owen's Lake located on the Southern Pacific Railroad, through which the products of this mine passed.
