This is an intriguing piece of Nevada postal history. It is a cloth lined envelope sent to WW Hobart, State Controller in Carson. It has an orange Wells Fargo & Co. Express adhesive label with UNIONVILLE, NEV stamped. And then on the back, the envelope is sealed with a red wax seal for the Unionville Wells Fargo office! No date, but Hobart was controller from 1871-79, so this must be from the 1870s. Why is it cloth lined and sealed with wax? We suspect this envelope carried money! By federal law in the 1860s, mail was handled only by the US Post Office. But since WF needed faster, reliable service. So they created a Pony Express Stage service, using envelopes from US Post Offices, to give a nod to the federal law by cancelling the stamp and printing the WF black bar on the envelope. To have the orange WF sticker is even rarer!
