June 28, 1861 postmark from Washington City. Good to Fair. Letter is 8 x 5" and four pages. The soldier writing RM Casto(?) is stationed with Company G of the 5th Regiment of Massachusetts volunteers. One page is about digging for gold near where he is stationed at Camp Massachusetts. "Instead of drilling as we usually do, we went to digging gold." A beautiful little creek runs below the camp and the 'boys' can be found there as gold has been found. "One of the boys washed out about $2.00 worth this forenoon." Also news of an officer receiving a promotion to the regular army and a soldier who shot himself. Camp Massachusetts was at Shuter's Hill, near Alexandria, Virginia. They arrived there on June 2, 1861.
