Lot of 6 multi-page letters regarding a 1917 coal mining strike at Klein, Montana. Klein is located in Musselshell County. 1) Two copies of a 5-page typed letter from the United Mine Workers of America, Klein, August 2nd, 1917, to the directors of the Republic Coal Company. Discusses violation of 1912 company agreements relating to the number of cars assigned to each pair of miners, as well as preference to older miners over new hires, and car bearing men over non-car bearing men. These violations have resulted in too many miners being employed and not having enough work to do. 2) Four 1917 letters addressed to Jeanette Rankin, who was a Montana Congresswoman at the time, seeking her help in the mining strike. (Rankin was the first woman to hold federal office in the United States, and the only woman elected to Congress to represent Montana.) Three of the letters are written on pictorial letterhead for the united Mine Workers Klein office. Letters are each multiple pages. One letter mention that over 170 men have left Klein due to the strike "and as long as this war continues there is little chance of them getting any miners." Fascinating and historically significant.
