Very rare. Stamped "Cleveland. O. Oct. 28. 1884" on title page. Also has later inscription saying this is the property of J. Schweier, "Presented to me by Mr. MacDonald of N.Y.C.R.R. whose father was formerly in the express service. Nov. 8, 1944." 86pp. Includes 317 regulations/instructions based on nearly every situation the agent could encounter. Such as 287 "Suspicious Characters," which advises: "Messengers should keep close watch for suspicious characters watching their cars, also the movements of their cars while at stations. If an attempt is made by robbers to detach engine and Express car, the safe should be locked and thrown out at once, when the messenger may also leave the car if possible." Or No. 57, giving specific details on gold and silver coin shipments and packaging. (No bags can contain more than $5,000 gold or $500 silver.) Or No. 109 and 110, dealing with the transport of corpses. Or No. 256, advising that "Messengers on all first class routes must provide themselves with revolvers."
