United States Mining Company ñ Virginia District, Story County, N.T. - Certificate # 266 issued to a. Riesen for 10 shares on Sept. 5th, 1864. Signed by President Isxxx and Secretary J. M. Buffington. Incorporated on Dec. 3rd, 1862 and capitalized at $2,000,000; 4000 shares at $500 each. This is a very high price per share for the period. Vignette at top of capitol building with people and horses in foreground. Vignette at lower left of a revolutionary military man on horseback. Datelined San Francisco. Black border and print. Virginia District, Story (note the spelling) County, N.T. Printer ñ Designed and engraved on stone by Fishbourne, cnr Washington & Sansome, S.F. . 5 x 10.5. Uncancelled. Red- brown, 25-cent Power of Attorney Internal Revenue stamp at right. Company seal embossed at center bottom with a tunnel mining scene. We could find no information on this company. Not to be confused with United States Gold and Silver MC in Lander County at the same time. No references to this company found anywhere. Buffington was a professional mining secretary in San Francisco (Langley's Business Directory for 1866, p.100). The only reference for a Riesen in this time period is in Kelly's 1862 Directory of Nevada on p.189; Riesen House, Reisen and Foster Proprietors in Gold Hill, p.189.
