United States Navy Yard, New York, March 31st, 1851 receipt from Edward T. Dunn, Purser for the US Navy, for $212.12. Signed by John Sloat. 2.5 x 8" John Sloat was aboard the "United States" during the War of 1812. He was appointed Commander of the Pacific Squadron in 1844. On June 7, 1846, he was given word that Mexicans had invaded Texas, and he sailed for Monterey, California. On July 7, 1846, he landed a detachment at Monterey and proclaimed the annexation of California on behalf of the US! He dispatched one of his officers to take possession of San Francisco. Sloat was promoted to Commodore in 1862 and Rear Admiral in 1866.
