The Shmoos first appeared in Al Capps Li'l Abner comic strip in 1948. Abner discovered the Shmoos when he ventured into the forbidden "Valley of the Shmoon". A shmoo is shaped like a plump bowling pin with stubby legs. Capp gave the shmoos these characteristics: they reproduce asexually, are delicious to eat and love to be eaten. They also produce eggs, milk and butter. They also had no bones and are naturally gentle. Capp's facsimile signature is at the bottom left. The bonds were used as a reward for any youngster that purchased a savings bond, therefore becoming a shareholder in the United States of America (wiki). The bond is in excellent, uncancelled condition.
